EFT

This is a simple do-it-yourself way of calming down any emotion - fear , anger , upset, panic, jealousy, craving, grief, bitterness, etc. etc. - and even some sensations in the body like tension, aches, weariness etc.

It just involves tapping with the fingers on specific points on the head and the upper part of the body while repeating a few words. The points you tap are the ends of meridian lines, energy channels through the body that are used in acupuncture and eastern medicine. By tapping you are sending a vibration down the channel, which helps to clear the blocked energy. By repeating keywords that keep your mind attuned to the emotion, you can keep working on the energy block that thought produces, until it is cleared – it’s not a distraction!

Anyway, it works, for most people most of the time. So try it.

It works best on a specific identified emotion. Choose any word or phrase to name the feeling. If you’re not sure what to call it, call it ‘this feeling’.

It’s good first of all to give it a score out of ten as to how bad it feels, where 0 is nothing at all, and 10 is the worst you can imagine.

First tap with all four fingers on the bottom edge of either hand (the karate chop!) and at the same time repeat this affirmation three times:

“Even though I feel …………, I totally and completely accept myself.”
You can name the feeling, or simply call it “this feeling”.

Then tap with one, two or three fingers, on each of these points in turn, at least seven times each, while saying your keyword or phrase once each time:

  1. Top of head (soft spot in the middle)
  2. Inside edge of both eyebrows
  3. On the bones on the outside of both eyes
  4. On the bones immediately under both eyes
  5. Between the nose and the lip (one hand in the middle)
  6. Between the lip and the chin (ditto)
  7. On the chest, just down from the inside end of both collar bones – drum with all fingers
  8. Down from one armpit, about where the bra strap is, or level with the nipple in men
  9. Just below the left breast

Finally tap once more with all four fingers on the underside of the hand, this time saying ‘I’m OK’.
Then take a deep breath and let it go. Then ask your self how you feel now. Has the score changed? Has the feeling changed?

Usually you will feel a bit better. Maybe the number has gone down a bit. Maybe the feeling has changed to a different one. In any case, go again with ‘Even though I feel …..(whatever it is)..

Usually you’ll need to work at it a bit to get the feeling right down.

Be free in your choice of words to describe the feeling. After all, this is the Emotional Freedom Technique, otherwise known as EFT or tapping.
