Beating Colds and Flu
Colds and Flu can be stopped in their tracks if you catch them at the first sign. Decide you are not having it this time and back up the intention with your own favourite antiviral treatment such as Vitamin C or Echinacea. L-lysine is another immune system booster. All three can be obtained from health food stores. If you are tired and run down, use the Bach flower remedy Olive. If you did get cold, warm yourself up thoroughly. There is evidence that warming up your nose and eating curry do have an effect!

Statins and side effects
Just over three years ago my doctor here in Hungary frightened me into taking statins for my high cholesterol. I say frightened, because she talked of heart attacks and strokes and how seriously they take this in Hungary.
I have to admit to falling into the repeated pattern of the past, whereby I didn't listen enough to myself and thought the medical profession knew better than I. After trying with diet to bring down the cholesterol count and failing, I accepted the statins.
I cannot pinpoint exactly when I started suffering from depression and it was nothing major, but every morning it was hard to kick myself out of bed and try to be positive. Anyone who knows me finds this very strange behaviour and I could only put it down to menopause hormone activity as I do get brief anxiety attacks with the old hot flushes. But this was different. Not a brief, momentary thing, but rather a feeling of "what is the point of anything?".
I decided to search the internet - something I wish I had done earlier but then again, maybe the fact that I wasn't interested in anything was the reason I didn't?! I found many people who said the very same thing regarding depression. They also said that as high cholesterol was due to the liver not functioning 100%, so, why take statins which can cause liver damage? Another side effect is muscle pain and weakness - a good point when you think that statins are supposed to help prevent heart attacks - and what is the heart if not a muscle? Further investigation showed that nothing is proven for the effect of statins when a heart condition is non existent. However, the pharmaceutical companies do not mention depression as a side effect - because it cannot be proven. Double standards or what?
I asked the doctor if I had to come off the statins slowly and she replied no, I could just stop them.
Forty eight hours later I had no depression and it has not returned. This was in October 2010, so I think I can safely say the statins were the cause.
I have since investigated helpful, natural remedies for lowering cholesterol and helping liver function and these include:
2 cups of speedwell herb tea a day
Co-enzyme Q10 x 1 a day tablet
Milk thistle x 1 a day tabletI've found that Healthspan offer the best prices for the tablets - free delivery in the UK.
Anyway, thought I should share this so that others may have a more informed view.
