Osteopathy - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis & treatment used for a variety of musculo -skeletal problems involving joints, muscles, bones, ligaments & intervertebral discs.

What happens during Osteopathy?

Many people visiting our clinic describe feeling some sort of spinal stiffness, aching or pain. This may be their neck, mid-back, low back or pelvic/hip areas. Sometimes there can be a nerve being irritated or trapped. This often causes arm or leg pain (sciatica), sometimes with tingling or numbness over an area of skin. Careful case history taking and examination is needed to diagnose the precise cause.

Treatment may include gentle rhythmical movements of the affected area which feels quite relaxing. Gentle stretching techniques are used to release joints and intervertebral discs. This relaxes muscles, decreases inflammation and helps release the joints and trapped nerve. This in combination with advice and a programme of home based exercises will relieve the stiffness and pain.

Who is it for?

There are many other conditions which can be treated effectively by osteopathy; the list below shows some of the more common ones.

Headaches
Whiplash injuries
Trapped nerves
Shoulder & arm pain
Wrist & hand pain
Hip & knee problems
Sciatica
Posture problems
Calf, ankle, foot & heel pain
Stiff & painful necks
Frozen or stiff shoulder
Tennis & golfers elbow
Low back pain
“Slipped disc”
Arthritic pain & stiffness
Upper back & chest pain

Medical Insurance

Most private medical insurance schemes including BUPA and PPP will pay for osteopathic treatment.

Time Line Therapy - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Time Line Therapy

What is Time Line Therapy™?

Our past experiences and the memories that go with them affect how we approach and interpret things that happen to us in our lives today, yes even at this very moment!

We all have a way of storing everything that has ever happened to us (the past) and what we are expecting is going to happen in the future.  We automatically know the difference between something that happened last week and something that happened in our childhood.  This is because our Unconscious Mind has stored everything that has ever happened to us in a Time Line and has time/date stamped the memory.  What most people don’t realise is how much information is stored with these memories.  The most relevant things that are stored with the events are how we felt at the time and what we made it mean.

Time Line Therapy™ is a specific process designed to trace a particular negative feeling, belief or limiting decision back to the first time in memory that it can be found. The theory behind this is that problems in the present day are likely to have their roots in the past.  So, what is bothering us now is not what is happening now but what it has reminded us of from the past (at an unconscious level).

Time Line Therapy™  allows us to go back to the very root cause of a problem and resolve the problem at that point in time. The problem could have started in childhood, during our birth, whilst we were in the womb, during an event in a previous lifetime or it could have been something that happened to one of our ancestors.

Time Line Therapy™ allows you to gain emotional control over your life. Inappropriate emotional reactions such as bursts of anger, periods of apathy, depression, sadness, anxiety and chronic fear are responsible for preventing people from achieving the quality of life they desire.  Limiting decisions such as “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t get things right” create false limitations and hamper your ability to create reachable and attainable goals and outcomes. Time Line Therapy™ is a technique that allows you to release negative emotions and beliefs from the memories in which they are held therefore freeing you to react to future situations without the emotional baggage of the past.

Time Line Therapy™ is a process that will assist you:

  1. To let go of Negative Emotions from the past such as: Anger, Sadness, Hurt
  2. To let go of Limiting Decisions from the past such as: I’m not good enough
  3. To create your future the way you want it.

What happens during Time Line Therapy™?

The session begins with a discussion between you and the therapist about what you hope to achieve. I then ask you questions to get to the root cause of the problem the very first event. The negative emotions of Anger, Sadness, Fear, Hurt and Guilt are cleared first and then any other negative emotions that are specific to you are released. Next we clear any Limiting Decisions and Beliefs some of which you may be aware of but others will be identified whilst we are working on the negative emotions. Finally, having resolved the unresolved issues in the past, Time Line Therapy™ gives us a specific way of creating your future dreams and goals in a simple process that produces the results you desire.

The results of Time Line Therapy™ are breathtaking. Clients feel as though an enormous weight has been lifted from their shoulders (it has). The transformation has begun and you are completely in control of achieving and reaching your potential.

Time Line Therapy™ is unique as it rapidly accesses the ‘root cause’ of any problem, and allows re-assessment from a unique and totally safe perspective - before the event occurred.

Negative emotions previously associated vanish and the learning’s required for immediate healing are discovered. The dis-associate pre-event perspective is unique in the field, and is the secret to Time Line Therapy’s remarkable results.

Who is Time Line Therapy™ for?

The Time Line Therapy™ process is for anyone who is ready to move forward with their life and release the effects of past negative experiences and change “inappropriate” negative programming in minutes rather than in days, months or years.
Imagine what we can achieve together!

All you have to do now is call and make an appointment and let the journey begin.

Bowen Technique - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Bowen Technique

What is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a system of muscle and connective tissue therapy developed by the late Thomas Bowen of Geelong in Australia. The technique is a light touch, non-invasive, non- manipulative therapy. On the face of it a Bowen session involves only light moves, applied to specific points on the body with significant pauses between sets of moves. The therapist uses their fingers or thumbs to gently challenge and roll over muscle, ligaments, nerves and connective tissue in order to elicit a healing response in the body. Nothing is imposed on the body - the sole intention of the work is to encourage the body to respond by stimulating its own innate healing ability. The body is amazing - self healing can often be achieved with minimal outside influence.
This technique has a dramatic and relaxing effect on the whole body, not only affecting postural and structural changes but also a persons sense of well being. Bowen addresses the whole body, working on many levels including the physical, chemical, emotional and psychological well-being of each client.
The Bowen Technique is successful at helping to restore the body to the balance and harmony of its original “blueprint”.

Who is Bowen for?

The Bowen Technique is suitable for almost anyone. It is a safe, gentle treatment that can be used on babies, the elderly, women and men. Bowen is suitable for the very sick as well as sports people and those with long term health problems. In fact whoever you are and whatever your state of health Bowen could help you.

The Bowen Technique is complementary to conventional medicine and may safely be used in conjunction with other medical treatments. A Bowen therapist will never diagnose or prescribe medication and will consult your medical advisor if appropriate.

Many Bowen therapists specialise in particular areas of expertise such as sports injuries, palliative care or babies. However you don’t have to be ill to reap the benefits of Bowen. Many people have Bowen therapy as health maintenance and to boost the immune system thereby helping the body cope naturally with the stress of modern day living, coughs and colds and seasonal allergies which seem to be so prevalent. One of the most noticeable effects of Bowen is the feeling of well-being that it induces which is beneficial for all aspects of our being.

How can Bowen help me?

The technique is helpful for many conditions often offering long term and permanent relief. It is quite often that clients will feel the benefits of reduced pain, increased mobility, enhanced relaxation and better sleep from the very first session.

Our experience tells us that after a minimal number of treatments painkilling drugs and some medical treatments may be reduced or discontinued (always with the client in consultation with a medical professional) and surgical intervention has sometimes been avoided altogether.

Some of the conditions which have responded to the Bowen Technique:

Anxiety/ stress related conditions
Back pain, sciatica and spinal problems
Bedwetting in children
Blood pressure (high or low)
Circulation and oedema
Digestive and bowel problems (such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation)
Fibromyalgia, M.E. and chronic fatigue syndrome
Frozen shoulder
General muscle stiffness
Gynaecological problems (heavy or painful periods, fibroids)
Headaches and migraines
Infertility
Hormonal imbalances
Joint problems including ankle and knee problems
Lymphatic drainage
Newborn baby problems
Post dental trauma and jaw problems
Post operative recovery
Respiratory conditions
Repetitive strain injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome
Sports injuries
Seasonal allergies
Whiplash injuries

What happens during a Bowen session?

The Bowen therapist will talk to you first and take a medical history on your first visit to better understand you and the problem you would like to address. The first session usually lasts 1 ½ hours with follow up treatment usually lasting from 45 minutes to an hour.
A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle rolling type movements on skin. You may choose to remain dressed and this is perfectly fine as your therapist will be able to work through a single layer of light, loose clothing. You will be resting on a comfortable therapy couch or may choose to remain seated if lying down is difficult or uncomfortable. It is possible to adapt the procedures to almost any position- for someone in a wheelchair, lying on ones side or even standing.
During the treatment you will be draped with covers to keep you warm and only the area of the body being worked on will be uncovered.
The unique feature about Bowen is the pauses or rests between sets of moves. This is to allow the body time to rebalance itself and start the healing process. During these pauses the therapist will usually leave the room so that you can relax without feeling observed or the need to make conversation. In fact Bowen works best if the session is carried out with minimal conversation so that the brain is not distracted. However it is important to let the therapist know if you experience any unusual sensations as this will affect the session.

Two or three treatments at regular intervals are usually enough to achieve lasting relief however it is worth bearing in mind that everybody responds differently to the treatment and the results you see may depend on the complexity and length of time you have had your health concern. Some chronic conditions may require ongoing, long term sessions.

To receive maximum benefit whilst having Bowen it is recommended that you wait 5 days before and after Bowen before having any other physical therapies.

Intuitive Massage - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Intuitive Massage

What is Intuitive Massage?

Intuitive Massage simply means massage that is in tune with the energy that the therapist is working with: that is, your energy and the connection with higher energies and information. All of the therapist’s senses come together from the heart chakra, together with the feedback she receives through her hands touching areas of your body. This gives the therapist a knowledge and awareness that can be trusted as being loving and potentially healing, working on all levels, spiritual, mental, emotional and physical. This intelligence then manifests through the physical as an energy that enables healing to take place. An overall sense of well-being is activated in every cell as it remembers its original natural pattern.

Massage is given to meet each person’s needs at that moment!

It can be helpful to practise also certain exercises through breathing, yoga, dancing and other self-related techniques you feel comfortable with.

Who is it for?

Intuitive massage can be helpful for nerve problems, e.g. sciatica, by relaxing and toning the nerves. Massage improves the condition of all the body’s organs, stress related problems, headaches, low self esteem, depression, insomnia, hormonal symptoms, and circulation problems. It can be soothing for any type of arthritis related problems and also helpful with the aftercare of stroke victims. Massage is also helpful for muscle tensions on the neck, head, face, shoulders, arms, upper and lower back and other areas as well.

Shiatsu - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Shiatsu

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a gentle touch treatment with a clear diagnostic framework. It is ideal for stress related disorders and preventative care   It works on the meridian lines (energy pathways)  and acupoints in your body. I use gentle pressure and stretching, depending on your current energy state. The one hour consultation will begin with a discussion about your health
history and treatment aims (all sessions are 1 hour). Shiatsu is usually done as you lie comfortable on a supportive mat on the floor.

Shiatsu can also offer insight into what is happening with you energy wise at the moment- and how that relates to your life. Shiatsu is used for emotional and physical conditions and also for general health maintenance. It offers a quiet space in the midst of busy lives and possible turmoil. It helps you to feel centred and in touch with your strengths as well as your difficulties. Tips are sometimes offered: things you can do to keep your health on track.

Is Shiatsu for me?

Clients usually find it relaxing, rejuvenating and value the quiet, supportive time.  It can help you reconnect with your own strengths, feel more positive and offer new insights into your life and health. You don’t have to be super fit or super healthy to have a Shiatsu.  You are not required to strip off as Shiatsu is done with you clothed. You can try one session and then book a series if you like. If you have been in hospital, it is possible to build Shiatsu sessions into your Care plan. Some clients come with physical problems, some with emotional/ mental health issues, and some for a general feel good session and health maintenance.

In our lives most of us at different times experience wellness and illness, happiness and sadness, energy and, exhaustion, confidence and anxiety in varying degrees. I find it encouraging that in Shiatsu all aspects are seen as important, contributing to wholeness. That even in our most frightened or dark times there is some level of wellness and light in us. Shiatsu is one way of helping us relax, and build on our strengths.

Who is it for?

Clients include mothers, construction workers, company directors, NHS staff, carers and also people with conditions limiting their ability to work. Men and women from a broad spectrum of ages, cultures and conditions choose to have Shiatsu.

I see both men and women, ranging in ages from 18-80!
Mobility is required (ability to climb stairs in Clinic).

The service is open to discharged hospital patients, those in continuing community MH care, carers, NHS staff, and the general public. Some clients may have Shiatsu written into their Care Plan and some may use Personal Budgets.

I see clients who have been affected by bereavement,  work stress, exhaustion, job loss, shock, trauma, long term unemployment, loneliness, abuse issues, ethnic/ cultural difficulties, life crisis. People may present with loss of hope, panic attacks, body/ mind disassociation, numbness, anxiety, fear, trust issues, suicide attempts, self-harming, holding a lot of tension, agitatation, sleep difficulties, difficulty with verbal or emotional expression.

My clients also include those who want a general MOT or attention to a physical problem.

To benefit, clients need a basic level of insight.
To be interested in recovery and maintaining wellness/ independence.

‘Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of Shiatsu?
Relaxation, better sleep, improved mobility and blood circulation, fresh perspective, renewal of energy and hope.

Is it possible to have whilst I am on medication?
Yes, Shiatsu works with your health where you are now and treatment does not interfere with medication. It is a safe treatment with no toxic side effects and does not interfere with modern medical treatment.

Do I have to be ill to have Shiatsu?
No! Many clients use Shiatsu for a feel good hour and for health maintenance. I am a keen advocate of preventative care, as both time and cost effective!

Do I have to take my clothes off?
No, Shiatsu is done through your own loose, comfortable clothing.

How long have you practised?
20 years. In London and in Northamptonshire.

Why were you drawn to Shiatsu?
It is a very humane form of health care. It looks at the mind, the body, the emotions and all the things that can effect us. It has a framework that has always made sense to me, through my own ups and downs in life. I was a graphic designer originally and the emphasis on balance and harmony and the beautiful names of the acu-points has also always appealed to me!

I have had some serious problems, is Shiatsu still useful for me?
Yes, absolutely. Shiatsu looks at ways of reducing the stress or pain of immediate problem you are experiencing, but also looks to resolving the underlying causes.

Neuro Linguistic Programming - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Neuro Linguistic Programming

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming ?

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming, a name that links the three most influential parts involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming.
Neuro refers to our nervous system and how we think, by becoming aware of our thinking patterns we can gain an understanding of how they influence our results. The neurological system (brain) regulates how our bodies function.
Linguistic refers to how we use language, both verbal and non-verbal and how that affects us.  By learning to use our language effectively we can change our thinking and master the ability to communicate effectively. Language determines how we interface and communicate with our brain and other people and how we use this interaction to get the results we want for ourselves and others.
Programming refers to the strategies we run throughout our lives in the form of habitual programmes.  By gaining an understanding of these strategies, we can change them, keep them or improve them to enhance our potential.
NLP is a method of influencing the brain behaviour through the use of language and other types of communication, to enable a person to ‘recode’ the way the brain responds to stimuli, and manifest new and better behaviours.
NLP is a ‘model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them’ and ‘a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour’

What are the benefits of NLP?

Essentially, NLP is the study of excellence in how we think, how we behave and how we communicate.  It provides a series of techniques, skills and methodologies that can be used to create strategies to enable us to fulfil our potential in all areas of our lives.
NLP is today a highly effective system that changes the patterns of emotional and mental behaviour in order to enable you to achieve more success in whatever you do and to enjoy a happier personal life.
NLP enables you to add flexibility and effectiveness to your work and personal life and improve the quality and range of your life choices.  By using NLP to educate yourself in effective communication and self awareness you can learn new behaviours and adapt them in order to create the outcomes you choose.
NLP will enable you to be free to change into the person you always wanted to be and to inspire change in others.
NLP methodology can also help you to change your mental habits to emulate those used successful people.  BY using NLP you can change habits and behaviours in yourself and others.  It allows you to become a more effective negotiator and achieve more in your work.
In short NLP allows people to have more choices about their lives.  It is all about freedom.

Is NLP a therapy?

The difference between NLP and therapy is defining NLP as an educational process which can be used to do things that psychotherapy so rarely manages i.e.: - to bring about lasting and constructive change.  NLP differs from most therapies in that it is solutions orientated.  It is not interested in analysing and dissecting a ‘problem,’ but rather focuses on finding satisfactory outcomes for clients.
NLP is about self-discovery, exploring, identity and mission. It also provides a framework for understanding and relating to the ‘spiritual’ part of human experience that reaches beyond us as individuals to our family, community and global systems.  NLP is not only about competence and excellence; it is about wisdom and vision.
NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence; and also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about.

Who uses NLP?

NLP is extremely popular in the self-help, therapy, sports, education, performance and corporate worlds.  In fact it is used in so many areas of life that it would be easier to list where it isn’t used.NLP is used to enhance performance, to help an individual control their emotional state and to stay focused on what they want from life.  It incorporates specific NLP strategies and techniques designed to produce specific outcomes.  E.g.:- the famous NLP “Fast Phobia Cure” has a very different set of techniques in comparison with the NLP “Motivation Strategy.”

What is Hot Stone Therapy?

Hot Stone Therapy has become very popular again the last few years.

A full hour of pampering using smooth warmed basalt stones to massage the body
in long flowing strokes which relax and unwind muscle tension and stress
The senastion produced by the gliding heated stones, combined with the occasional ‘click’ of the stones touching each other is something that can only be appreciated by experiencing it.

Your treatment will normally last 1 hour. You will be covered by towels, apart from the small part of the body being worked on. The towels are moved by the therapist  to maintain your privacy at all times.

With our experienced Stone Massage Therapist you will be in very good hands and half an hour into the massage you will be ‘blissed out’

Who is it for?

These are particularly effective on back and shoulder problems, as well as some siaticia pain problems.
Hot stones give a totally relaxing massage to remove all your stress, and can help with sleep patterns.

Acupuncture in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture works. It is a tried and tested system of complementary medicine. The chinese and eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and  maintain good health for thousands of years.

What happens when I go for a treatment?

You will be asked about your current symptoms, what treatment you have received, your medical history, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state. The acupuncturist is also likely to feel your pulses on both wrists, and may ask to look at your tongue. The acupuncture points used are not always close to the body where you experience the problem. For example, although you might suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your foot or hand.

What does it feel like?

Acupunture needles are much finer than needles used for injections. and blood tests.

How many sessions will I need?

Frequency and length of treatment depends on your individual condition. Some change is usually felt within five treatments, although occasionaly only one or two treatments are required.. Some patients may need treatment over several months or long term. Your acunpuncurist will normally ask to see you once a week at first.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture has a very sound track record. The needles used a single-use, sterile and disposable. Responses to treatment can sometimes include tiredness or mild dizzyness, and on occasion minor bruising may occur. However, all are such reactions are short-lived.

Who is it for?

Many people come to acupunture for help with specific symptoms or conditions, and some because they simply feel generally unwell. Others choose acupuncture to enhance their feelings of well-being. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages. It can also be used alongside conventional medicine.

Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnessness and symptoms,  from clearly defined complaints such a s headaches, vomitting, neck ache, and back pain, throught to more general feelings of ill health such as nausea and low energy.

Acupuncture is often used in the treatment of a variety of conditions and in conjunction with western medicine. Increasingly women are choosing to have acupuncture to support them throughout pregnancy, labour and after giving birth.

You can get more information about which conditions acupuncture has been used for by visiting the BAcC wesite www.acupuncture.org.uk

Anyone with hair or scalp problems, including alopecia, thinning hair, patchy loss, male and female baldness; psoriasis, eczema, dandruff, acne, contact dermatis or any form of scaly, dry or greasy scalp.

What happens during a Trichology session?

Our hair is of psychological importance to us and is often a barometer of our health; any form of hair loss or scalp disorder may leave us feeling extremely self-conscious and embarassed. Trichologists help to diagnose, offer advice or treat hair and scalp problems.

Treatments for hair loss usually consist of electrotherapy, which comprises high frequency machinery, infra red radiant heat and ultra violet lamps. Electrotherapy helps to promote the flow of blood to the scalp, improving circulation, bringing in oxygen and nutrient supplies. It also sedates or soothes the scalp and helps eliminate waste products, giving the best possibility for new hair growth to occur.

Cream ointments, lotions and shampoos may also be applied to help stimulate the scalp. These can be purchased for use at home. All products used are hypoallergenic and suitable for the most sensitive skins as we manufacture them specifically for our patients ourselves.

Scalp treatments applied in the clinic are usually keratolytics which act as chemical peels to help dissolve the over production of scales on the scalp; they also have antibacterial properties.

We also use infra red radiant heat to help tissue relaxation, soothe the scalp and improve the circulation of the scalp by the heat emitted from the lamps.

Ultra violet light is used in scalp problems and is particularly important in treating psoriasis and acne. UV helps the skin to heal: it is beneficial for the immune system as it encourages the flow of white blood cells to the scalp; and as heat is produced, it has many therapeutic effects by encouraging the blood to the area bringing with it oxygen, nutrients and improving circulation.

When necessary, it may be appropriate to liaise with a client's GP for medication, refer them to a dermatologist or advise a blood test when an underlying medical problem is suspected.

The length of treatment varies according to how much of the body is to be worked on. This may be a full body massage, back massage, neck and shoulders, etc.

Reiki in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a subtle energy treatment, an ancient form of ‘hands-on’ healing originating from Tibet, China and India. The potential of Reiki healing becomes apparent if we consider that the word Reiki means “universal life force energy” and that during treatment, practitioner and client brainwaves are synchronised in alpha state, which pulse in unison with the earth’s magnetic field.

Reiki energy is channelled to all levels of being including physical, emotional and spiritual.

What happens during Reiki?

Treatment begins with a short initial consultation. Following this, the client remains fully clothed and relaxes on a couch. Jewellery and shoes are removed. Appropriate colour essences and music may be used as the practitioner places their hands gently on the client’s body and holds the position for as long as needed. Both the front and back of the body will receive Reiki healing, from head to toe! Professional integrity is retained throughout.

You might feel warmth, tingling sensations or deeply relaxed – the experience varies from person to person.

Who is it for?

Reiki is suitable for most individuals, particularly those who are challenged by disease or managing emotional changes in their life – Reiki is used in hospitals and prisons. It is suitable for all age groups and expectant mothers and by those unable to lay prone or supine. Reiki can be experienced as a ‘one off’ treatment, a 3-week treatment session, or as part of ongoing healing.

Neuro-Muscular Transmission in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire - Callistherapy

Home | Therapies | Neuro-Muscular Transmission

What is Neuro-Muscular Transmission?

Neuro-Muscular Transmission is a way of working through the hands that makes use of the body’s own communication system through the connections between muscles, nerves and the brain to facilitate a reprogramming of the mind-body system to restore health. It is commonly known as NMT for short.

What happens during NMT?

You remain fully clothed. The therapist places both hands on you and these begin to move slowly in response to the body’s signals. Usually you begin to feel very relaxed and drowsy and may even fall asleep. With neurological and emotional work, the hands usually work on the head or even off the body in the energy field. In cases of long-standing muscular distortion, there may be an uncomfortable period of readjustment for a day or two until the body relaxes into its proper configuration.

Who is it for?

NMT is effective in the treatment of pain and restricted movement caused by injuries and other stresses; a wide variety of problems caused by muscular distortion and restriction of the organs of the body; neurological problems; and the release of stuck emotion in the mind/body system.
